PROTEST

I don't know if everyone's human forves them to listen to NPR in the car, but mine does. If you've never ridden in an NPR-filled car, there isn't any music. Just a lot of talking. And that means sometimes I hear stuff about the world I'd rather not know about. Things a pug would never ever do. Things that make me sad.

Like the oil spill in the Gulf.

NPR has been talking about the oil for over a month now and it's STILL not fixed. It even sounds like it's getting worse. Me and Dutch donated our extra fur to sop up the oil, and I know lots of other dogs did too. So why is the oil still spilling??

When I think about all the fishes and turtles and things that live in the Gulf, it makes me want to cry. When I think of the people and dogs who live near the Gulf, it makes me want to cry. But I know crying won't fix anything. I mean, it won't even get me invited to a food party.

So I asked Google what I can do instead of crying. And Google said one way to demand change is to protest. So yesterday I kinda protested. At least I tried to protest. I parked myself in the middle of the sidewalk in front of our house and did the most intense Jimmy pose ever.

On the inside, I was demanding change. STOP THE OIL! SAVE THE GULF! But on the outside, I think I just looked cute. Because that's what people kept saying. Awwww - he's sooo cute. Oh my God - look at the PUG! One person said I looked like a "beached slug" (and I don't think they meant it as a compliment) but no one seemed to notice I was demanding change.

If you protest on the inside but no one else hears you, does it still count? Did my sidewalk-Jimmying do anything to save the Gulf??

Well, at least your protest did something for ME! Because your human told us about your sadness, my sadness was lifted a bit... would that make you a bit happier too?
It just IS heartbreaking, so bad, so far away and beyond our daily actions. I do cycle a lot more though, just to keep off buying petrol.
*Sigh*

I know what you mean, Puglet. My human said if all the pug dogs in the world protested it would be the world's largest cute fest. *Sigh*

I guess we can only hope that the humans protest.

Ellie, Emmitt and Eli said... Don't be sad Puglet, our human once told us being sad makes your heart heavy. Pugs are made of happy stuff, you know like peanut butter off a spoon, pudding from the cup and best of all whip cream (yummy!). Some things are just beyond the control of a pug. From San Antonio.

Aww, Puglet. It's the thought and intention that counts.

Puglet Dude...we're right there with you! It's very hard for cute little dudes like us to fix such a huge problem.

Just yesterday...we drove by the BP gas station down the street and I pushed my PugButt up against the window and gave them my best "pressed ham under glass"....but then mom told me to knock it off because the poor local dude that owns that gas station didn't make the mess in the gulf.

It's a total kerfuffle!

Love,

Awww... Puglet! Cheer up buddy! Let us humans worry about that stuff. The oil thing's got me pretty down lately too (That, and a few other world events!), but then I take Noodle for a walk and play with him and I feel so much better!! It doesn't make it go away, but we all need a happy release. Puggies make the world happier!

Puglet... I know how you feel! My grandhuman listens to talk radio all the time too and I hear all about the awful things going on! This oil spill has me really sad. I love what Salinger The Pug did (hehe) but his mom was right. We can just hope it is over soon.

Puglet,
Any protest is good, even the personal silent kind because thoughts can be powerful (like when you stare at your human long enough and get a treat).
But use the power of the paw and click on a petition protesting the oil spill and demand action.
One of my favorite sites is care2.com (lots of good causes and you can even create you own petition).
I also think fellow canine activist Stubby would have some great ideas on where to click to make a difference.

My mom gets sad, too, about the animals and people that are suffering because of the spill. She's always writing to her Congressman, and she says it does help a little (she calls it "putting pressure".)

OMD. Noodle's mom, you are so right. I *totally* forgot that, as a pug, I might not be able to fix the world - but I can make the broken one a whole lot happier.

That makes me feel alot better.

Pressed ham under glass? Hee hee. I've never tried that. Maybe a whole bunch of us should get together and do a group pressed-ham video and send it to BP! A window full of pressed pug butt would make some kind of statement, right??

Thanks Arnie for the congressman tip. And the care2.com petition clicking idea, Ollie. Being able to DO something would feel good. Even if that something only helps a little.

I figure it's like food: a little is better than nothing.

It's all about the intention when it comes to protests, and honestly Puglet, I think the power of what you did comes from the blogging about it. Go you!

I really hope the third attempt to close the well works, it's even making the news over here in Australia!

Hmmm. Maybe instead of protesting I should make the Gulf a get well card. Maybe write a Haiku??

Your Haiku's are always nice Puglet. We love reading them.
