LEAKY + ANGRY

Part sad, part mad.

Sorry for making everyone leak yesterday.
I've never been homeless, but me and Dutch were both recycled so it was really cool to hear about all the humans who do things to help with the recycling. My human says every little thing counts because even little things can make a huge difference

Oh. And superthanks Ollie-the-generous-Canadian-beagle for making a donation in my honor. Huge!

Anyway. Right now I'm feeling half leaky/half angry, but about somet
hing totally different. Today's leaky-anger-ness is about the National Park people. It's a superlong story and since some of you live in places like New Jersey and Poland and Brazil and Texas, I won't tell the whole entire story (you can read about it here).

The supershort version is this:

The National Park people want to change the rules for a lot of our loc
al fun places. Right now, the rules say dogs are OK. Off-leash dogs are OK. But the new rules say leashes. Or no dogs at all. And it sucks.

OCEAN BEACH, soon to be leashed?

These are places we go all the time. All the pictures you've seen of me and Dutch having fun off-leash? Taken at these places. But if the Park people get their way, you'll be seeing a lot less fun because we'll be spending the rest of lives on the end of a 6-foot leash.

Unless we go to the dog park and get beat up (which is what happens whenever I go to the dog park).

FORT FUNSTON, soon to be un-Fun?

The whole thing makes me very sad. And mad too. I got an email from another sad/mad SF pug who lives near one of the soon-to-be-unfun places and he asked if I could do something to help. We already wrote a letter to let the Park people know their new rules suck. I totally want to change the world and really want to do something more, but what?

I know my human will let me use the power of Nikon or the video thingy, but I don't know what to do with them. I need some serious ideas, or my days of running free might be totally over soon.

CRISSY FIELD, soon to be dog-free?

Puglet, you can come to Morro Bay where we have a dog beach!

Hi Puglet,
In San Jose there are absolutely NO DOGS allowed off leash in any of the parks AND some of the BEST parks don't allow dogs AT ALL. I don't get it myself. If dog parents are responsible and clean up/control their furkids, then there should be no problems SHARING a park. I am so sad about what is going on in San Francisco - a city SO PROGRESSIVE it allows pets on public transit (boo SouthBay for NOT allowing any animals aboard VTA)! And yet all the best off leash and dog friendly places in the City will soon be off limits to us.
It is a CRIME!!!!!

Oh, I am so sorry to hear that! I've never had an opportunity to take Lucy to a beach, but I just know she would love it. It doesn't seem fair that all of the dogs don't get to have a special place to run and play. It's not like you're hurting anyone. You're just having fun!

Oh Puglet, that totally sucks!!!! I have 3 pug, and I know that leash meands NO FUN!!! Maybe a petition would help??? If you could arrange some kind of event, with all your dog friends, and ask people which come to the National Park to sign the petition?? So you would let the people from the park know, that the new rule is stupid, and so many people and their dogs feel the same way. Your human's Nikon and camera would help to promote this event on internet, FB for example. I'm keeping my fingers cross for your and Dutch off-leash life :)

My mom hates this kind of stuff. A few people end up ruining it for everyone. And the "everyone" is usually NOT the problem.

Try calling or writing your congressman/woman or senator. That kind of thing REALLY works, if enough people do it.

Hi Puglet & Dutch,
We were always so jealous that where you live you could run off leash, go into stores and be cool and hang with your human at beaches and in parks. Our mom read that article for us.

In Texas we can't do any of that fun stuff except maybe in Austin. There are dog parks but our mom won't take us to them, bad owners let their dogs off leash and bad stuff happens so we never go.

Gee Puglet we don't know what to tell you buddy, but for now just keep going to your fun places and hopefully the fun times won't end.

We'll keep our paws crossed for you.

I love running off leash at the beach with you guys! How can that go away??
How about another "green pug" type video. You can show just how much fun it is to frolic on the beach, no boundaries and no leashes. You can do Beach Boys "I get Around" and show off all the fun off leash places dogs can explore.
I think you could make a funny video where a human is on leash being walked by their dog. Snort...video it to Rihana's S&M. Snort Snort, man I'm so silly

My humans told us when they went to France (don't know what that is) they played few rounds of golf. Many folks there were with their dogs entire round "OFF LEASH" and get to eat dinner with their humans after the round at the club house restaurant. They all behaved well - cuz they know what to/what not to do when they are off leash. How do we learn the off leash etiquette, if humans won't let us be off leash, because of this stupid rule?

Sammy - I am mad, don't make mill pug mad !!

Ugh, P-man. Our mom is in marketing, and whilst she personally doesn't go for the facebook thing, for rallying a crowd to action, it can be an AWESOME way to grass-roots mobilize! Almost like a virtual petition. Anyway, maybe having a call to action with some social media widely used would be good? Or old fashioned letter to sfgate maybe? Local media can still be a powerful thang!

Puglet,
Those pinheads who work in any government office respond to only one thing and that's voter protest.
There are thousands of dogs in SF and it's time to put the power of the paw to work. Every human owned by a dog has to call, email, sign a petition, stages rallies/community events and do anything they can to get their elected officials to understand this will NOT be tolerated.
Speaking of France...one of my human's favourite places in Paris is the Church of St. Roch. Since he is (one of) the patron saint of dogs, dogs are always welcome and allowed entry.
So, if dogs in Paris can have their own church, the least dogs in a city as forward thinking as SF should have, is the freedom to run on a beach OFF LEASH. I mean...come on!!
P.S. You make us smile every day. We made a donation for you so that we could make you happy, too!

I agree with Bellatrix....you should make a video like your "green" and "blue" videos and post it in as many places as possible so it can go viral....this is a terrible thing! I have to get my mom to read the story because we live in NJ and one of our favorite places to go is a dog beach in a National Park at Sandy Hook. Luna and I will be soooo sad if they take that away. So make a video and send it to all your followers so we spread the word!

Snorts and snarfles,
Bella

You should make a video like one of those sad dog commercials where dogs are homeless that makes us all leaky, but then show the good things that happen when they get a home with people they love and get to run free and play in the parks.....like how fun means love... Then send the video to all the news channels. I know our local news in phildelphia has a real strong tie to helping pets get what they need. They do tons of stories on making our pets lives better and even have a weekly ask the vet segment. The news people would really help push those park people and spread the word to more dog people.

We agree with a protest or gathering of some sort...... If the Park people see just how MANY of us are sad/mad about our park fun maybe they won't change the rules. If they see that we know how to behave and our humans know how to behave as well then maybe they will get the message. It will take ALOT of us here to stand together but I think we can send a VERY STONG MESSAGE of how we feel.

Ooops, forgot to mention that our human says thanks for all you do at the PHS. Her VERY FIRST job ever was volunteering at that shelter and she eventually became an Animal Care Technician there. She says she volunteered/worked there for around 7 years. She won't tell us how long ago that was but she says she has a LOT of wonderful memories from there.

The nanny state is a slippery slope indeed. Its all fine and dandy while you're banning other people's grocery bags and proclaiming pet owners are now pet guardians but eventually everyone loses their particular freedom to the whims of the elite.

Sabrina's mum here:
You have such a strong following and I really think you can use this to your advantage. The green and blue videos were great - very informative and still enjoyable to watch.

I think you should make a video, one showing happy dogs frolicking on the beach with lots of responsible humans in the background - some cleaning up poop, vs very sad dogs walking sedately on cement roads with cars wizzing by splashing rocks and mud in their faces ect.
How many states have dog friendly beaches? I can’t imagine very many. What you have is a real treasure

I really think that if you partner up with Ecodog and your SPCA they will be able to use your video as a vehicle for more awareness and petition signing. You have until May 29 to encourage people to send their comments in to the National Park Service.

I believe you can do it.

Crissy Field is the only place my little puggers can play off leash (her "selective hearing" kicks in everywhere else). We'll be devastated if they take that privilege away!
