DEAR PUGLET

Franklin

I get a lot of Dear Puglet emails. Usually it's just to say hi or say how cute I am. Sometimes there's a question. Stuff like how do you stay so slim? Where can I buy Toobles? What kind of camera does your human have that makes you look so cute? Y'know, things that are pretty easy to answer.

But I recently got a different kind of email. From a pug in need. His name is Franklin, he lives here in San Francisco, and is looking for a new home. Franklin's email made me leak a little bit, even though I know there will be a happy ending. Franklin said it'd be OK to share the email with everyone so I'll let him do the talking.

Dear Puglet,

My mom was hoping your mom could post something about me on your blog because I need a new home. I'm a super cute 3 year old, neutered male pug, named Franklin. My family really loves me and I love them but I'm just not a city dog.

I'm loyal and loving with my people and I get along with my dog friends but the trouble is I just hate everyone else! I'm kind of like a mini akita but cuter of course. My mom can't take me out to the dog park any more. In fact, you may have met me at pug sunday. I'm the pug who always attacks Dutch before I realize that chasing rubber chickens is more fun than fighting.

I'm an excellent guard dog. I hate being on a leash and all the people walking past my house all the time make me crazy. My family home is too busy! Too many people coming in and out all the time.

I need to live down at the end of a long dirt road in the country where I can play fetch to my hearts content and visitors are rare. Another dog to play with would be great.

My pluses: My mom says I am the best snuggler ever! I have really good breathing and eyes. I am very well trained. My tail is divine. I'm sweet and gentle with my family members, including the little girls.

My minuses: I have bitten a couple of people who have surprised me. Pug rescue won't take me because I'm a biter. My family thinks that our home just isn't the right place for me. I'm like a crabby old man trapped in a pug body! Can you help? Sincerely, Franklin the Pug

If you know of a non-city human looking for a pug to call their own, or have any ideas for Franklin... send us an email dailypuglet-at-gmail.com. We'll pass the message on to Franklin and his people.

Maybe Franklin's human can call Cesar Milan? He is in the California area (we think)? We wish we could take him, we live in the country but we have visitors all the time :( We will keep our ears open,Franklin.

This makes me so sad. Hope this finds Franklin the right match, they are out there, somewhere.

Franklin and his family seem to be the gold that reality show people are always looking for (Helllo! Animal Planet??), but it is supernice of you to help a brother out.
I am sure there is a perfect home out there for Franklin. Lets hope he gets there soon.

There may be OTHER Pug Rescue groups that would take Franklin, even though he's had a history of biting. And they would find an appropriate home - no kids, no other pets, etc. Franklin's mom could check on that.

Oh oh that would be an amazing idea! Try to call cesar first!!! Puglet work your magic!!!!!
This made our human leak a lot. She said she would just die if something happened to us!

Maybe you can tell Franklin's mom to post this message on pugvillage.com Alot of people who really really love pugs are there to help. Good luck Franklin!

I think Franklin needs some TLC and a little rehabilitation. Hopefully there is someone out there who can help with both!

I think there's got to be a rescue out there that would take/rehab a pug with a bite history. I know the french bulldog rescue does it--they just have to extra careful about who they place the dog with, and make sure the humans understand what they are getting into. And even though Franklin likes children, they probably wouldn't place him with kids...just in case. Oh, I sure hope someone will help him! I'm going to pass this message on to some pug people I know.

I knew you'd all have some good ideas! I know it will make Franklin's human feel better and *hopefully* maybe even help Franklin find a place in the country.

I was a country dog before I got recycled and can totally understand how a guy might like it better out there. Life in the city is cool, but it's not for everypug.

Someone suggested Cesar Milan, but there are many other excellent trainers (better than Milan.)

I hope Franklin's family will try working with trainers before they give him up. I think they owe it to him to try to improve his quality of life and chances of finding a new family. Moving him to a new environment is not the real solution, unless people are willing to work with him.

Poor Franklin. My point on this, is that pugs, in general, are happy dogs right? So it totally sucks that Franklin doesn't seem happy. There has got to be a reason behind all this, and whatever it is, I hope he can get the help he needs to be happy once again. I just can't imagine a life where everything in the world..makes me want to lash out. I really feel for Franklin. I will send happy thoughts his way.

I feel really bad for Franklin's family. It would totally crush my folks to have to give me up. But, I know they would always do what's right for me, not what's right for them. Sometimes a second home can do more for a pooch than a first home. It must be really hard for them to give away a dog that they love. It sounds like they have tried to work with Franklin. I hope he finds a new country-dog home soon.
Good luck Franklin!

Franklin, I know how you feel. I was a puppy mill breeder pug that was terribly abused, and as a result I'm blind. I was scared and bit people too. However, the Pacific Pug Rescue took me in and got the word out to my forever mom, who worked with me. Now I'm not stressed or afraid and am the jolly little center of the pack at home. I agree with the suggestion of other pug rescues. It makes my mom leak to think I could've been passed over for no good reason :( - Good luck - sending you affectionate snorts - Gertie...

I'm kinda with Lola on this one. Sounds like Franklin could use some 'work', but even with rehab - the city just might not be the right place for him.

My human says she fostered a spotted dog that sounds a lot like Franklin. He got SO overstimulated by the city, he was really hard to deal with. The people who adopted him were awesome and tried everything (EVERYTHING) to help him adjust, but the only time he was really happy was when my human + Dutch took him to hike with the cows (which I guess happened every week, even after he got adopted). He was perfectly fine once you took all the busy-ness of the city away.

After a year of trying, spotted dog was finally re-homed to a place in the country where he had room to run and relax.

we feel terrible about this. thanks Pug for getting the word out about poor Franklin. We hope for the best for him. We are sure that the right place can be found for him. If things get rough at Franklins current home while they decide what to do or find him a home; he can stay with us. We don't live in the country but we do live in quieter suburbia & have a very roomy yard for him. We're here if needed.

Awww, Zoey & Phoebe ~ you have gold hearts just like your mom! Especially you, Phoebe, because I know you probably don't want a house guest who competes for attention from Henrietta.

Check with Seattle Pug Rescue. They are great and can probably work with Franklin and find him a suitable home!

We would take you in a flash, but alas, we are citified...well, more like suburbafied. We are all leaking for you Franklin, hopefully a wonderful home with someone who can help will be found shortly.

Franklin's story makes me sooo sad. I just know he's full of love. It's hard for a puggie to lose his people and home. I hope Franklin's family will contact Cesar Milan or a good behaviorist.
I'm rootin' for ya' Franklin.
Thanks for helping your buddy out Puglet.

Very sweet story of a pug who really needs a loving home. If we lived closer we would have another puggy brother. If Frankie does get a home please tell us a happy story.

Puglet, thanks for sharing this story. We hope Franklin finds a good home in the wide open spaces. We are sorry that you were disgruntled yesterday and we hope your grunts have returned. We hope Franklin goes from overly gruntled to perfectly gruntled. Your friends, CC's.

Hey Puglet, on another subject we noticed that your human captures your essence with some weird thing called a Nikon and we wanted to let you know that the same thing that captured one of us and put it on your picture site had exactly the same name. Are all Nikons related? Do they like Pugs and Cats the same? Why can't a Nikon thing make Dutch smile more? We are Curious Clandestine Cats about these things and wondered if you know the secrets.

OH I wish that Franklin could live with me. I live in Wisconsin but don't love at the end of a dirt road. And we do have a lot of visitors.

I hope to find you a good home Franklin. I am running out right now to tell all of my friends.....we'll find you a good home buddy! :) You are in the right place!

I'm Franklin's human. I want to thank you all for your love and support. We have worked with two wonderful trainers already who were not able to help with Franklin. He is super well trained but we can't change his temperament. We actually tried to call Cesar but they only work with families in Southern California! We have had and loved this cutie since he was a nine week old puppy. He has been raised in a caring and loving home with lots of toys, dog friends, exercise, fun and under-the- covers privileges. All of your interest means so much to me. Thanks for all of your help and good thoughts

We LOVE Pacific Pug Rescue here in Portland! They do an amazing job at finding forever homes for us and you will find Franklin a forever home too.

Try Dallas Fort Worth Pug Rescue...their motto "No Pug Left Behind" or try Midwest Pug Rescue. I know you say that Franklin's eyes are good, but is there a possiblility that he is limited in vision or hearing? Or that someone he has come in contact in his lifetime teased or abused him? There are usually reasons for behavior like this.

I have always wanted a pug! I would love to take Franklin, but I live in South Carolina and I'm not sure a cross country journey would be good for him. Otherwise I feel like I have the perfect enviroment. My boyfriend and I live in a very small town and at the end of a dirt road with only two other houses and rare visitors.

I wish luck to Franklin and hope that he finds a loving forever home.

Any updates on Franklin? I've been told that Pug Savers http://www.pugsavers.com/ will often work with pugs that other rescues won't take...

I live in south bay, not off a country road but the humans will give Franklin all the exercise he needs. If Franklin's family is interested, please get in touch with me through my blog:
