MAKE YOUR OWN COOKIES!

I guess my human felt guilty for never home-making me anything, because yesterday she went to the Bullseye store and came home with a make-your-own-cookie kit.

If your human is the kind of human who believes in cooking,
you might not need a Christmas cookie kit. But mine totally does. Because if you haven't been paying attention, the whole homemade thing is a pretty huge deal around here because my human doesn't cook things very much. And by not very much, I mean never.

So making cookies in the oven was kinda... magical. And fun. We dumped the cookie stuff in a bowl, added water, then my human used her thumbs and a special thingy to make bone shapes. I tried to help by making bite marks in the cookies but this just got me in trouble.

My human put carob chips on top of each cookie to make them extrasuper tasty (thanks SA Pugs for the carob idea! My human has no idea how to drizzle, so we just got the chips) then the shapes went in the oven and came out cookies. I have no idea why we don't use the oven more often.

To be honest, the Christmas cookies didn't taste as good as the Pug Bars. They kinda tasted like a piece of pizza crust I found on the sidewalk once - but making them was pretty fun. At least until I got in trouble.

Google says there are tons of dog cookie recipes out there, if you think your human can handle a recipe. Or, if you have a human like mine, you can just do what my human did and buy the kit at Target. They make a kitty version too :)

Hey Pug! I am good at using the oven, but I didn't know there was a way to make cookies for my kitty. Thanks for the idea!

I especially love your modeling next to the counter full of cookies.

oh puglet! you're sooooooo lucky. apparently, mommy used to make cookies all the time for her old claire dog (there were other dogs before me?!?!), but she went to sleep and and after that, making doggie cookies made mommy sad. she said it's time to find the recipes and cookie cutters and make some for daisy and me!!! your human who doesn't know how to use the oven is very inspiring to other humans.

ps - thanks for the happy birthday wish! i was very excited when mommy showed it to me. it was like a movie star said it!!! :D

My human saw those in the bullseye store too! She didn't get them though. I'm lucky though, she likes to cook and use that oven thing. I'm trying to convince her to make me the pug bars, but I don't think she's going to. She made me doggie ice cream and I didn't like it. It had bananas in it and I don't like them. But the recipe is very easy - even for your human. All mine did was stick a bunch of things in the blender and then froze it.

Well going to work on making the human make those pug bars.

Oh Mookie, you totally have to get your human to make the pug bars. I lost a race for them and I don't like losing. They are *that* good.

Aw, Pepper. I hate it when humans are sad. Maybe your mom could start a new tradition thingy with the dog cookies just for you. Like a new shape or the tasty carob chips? My human says making new memories is always a good thing. I say if your human knows how to use a kitchen, she ought to be making you some cookies!

THE PUGLET said...

Yeah Emma - you should totally add the carob chips. They make the cookies soooo much better. I think I'll tell the cookie kit maker that too, so maybe next year they will put chips inside the kit. I mean, if it wasn't for the San Antonio pugs, my human never would have thought of the tasty carob.

Noodles - I think you;re right. I think the love made the cookies taste better too!

DMBY ~ yup, there is a kitty version! I don't know what you could put on top instead of carob. Tuna? Salmon skin?

Hmmmmmmm. Maybe I'll try the kitty version next :)

Oh boy! Thanks for the posts about making cookies! AND, thanks for the wheat substitute suggestions! As far as we know, I'm allergic to corn, wheat, and soy. My grandmaw is a fantastic baker and now you've inspired her to find a cookie recipe for ME! I can't wait. I'll try to save some for you too! Yay!! You're the best, Puglet!

Noodle, you might have her check out rice flour as well??? A nice kitty version could have cat nip sprinkled on top...not that those will be made in our house.

Puglet, you look soooo cute on that chopping board...be careful!

Hiya Puglett, Mr. Bear here, and Murph is looking over my shoulder. Our human makes extrasupertasty dog cookies with cornmeal and bacon grease! Yes, bacon grease! Like flat bacon cornbread. No good if you're allergic to corn, but otherwise awesome. We get them for holidays and when we're learning a new trick. Because we will do ANYTHING, ANYTHING! for those bacon cookies. There's even a cookbook just for puppy treats by Three Dog Bakery, you can get it at Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Three-Dog-Bakery-Cookbook-All-Natural/dp/0836269195
There might be cat stuff in there but I'm not sure. I'm more interested in bacon cookies than cats.

Hi Pug,
You're on the counter with the cookies with flower on your face. What's your secret? I want to be a baker too.

Hugs,
Suki

Mr Bear & Murphy ~

Those cookies sound tasty. Dutch ate grease once, but I've never tried it. Neither of us has ever had bacon. Hmmm. Can you buy bacon grease or do you have to make it?

Oh Suki,

Don't get too excited. It didn't last very long - 30 seconds, maybe. I got kicked off after I accidentally ate some of the cookie stuff.

Hi Puglet, Mr. Bear here again, Murphy is napping. My human saves the bacon grease when she cooks a pound of bacon, and keeps it in the refrigerator. She says you can keep the grease for months and months and it won't go bad. I am not sure how grease can be naughty, but that's what she said. I will ask my human to find the paper that says how to make the bacon grease cookies so Puglet can (maybe) taste them too.

K-9 Biscuits

3 cups flour (any combo white, wheat, rye, cornmeal, or oatmeal)
(My human uses 1 1/2 white flour, 1 1/2 cornmeal)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 cup (congealed, solid) bacon grease!! or
(very dull tasting) Crisco
1 egg
1/2 cup liquid (beef or chicken broth, low sodium; thin gravy, milk.)
Real Bacon bacon bits, a handful or two, if you want. I certainly want, so does Murph.

Combine the flours and garlic powder. And maybe some bacon bits. Or carob chips, hmm, that might be cool. Add the BACON GREASE!! (or Crisco. Whatever.) Blend until crumbly. Add egg and liquid and mix. Form dough into balls and knead a bit. Add small drops of water if dough is not sticking together to form a ball. May be stored in frig one week at this point, or frozen up to 6 months.

Roll out 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch thick and cut into shapes with cookie cutter. My human uses a teeny tiny heart shaped cutter and rolls the dough thin to make tiny cookies and more of them. (She says, always leave 'em wanting more. I think she means me and Murph wanting more bacon cookies.) Bake at 350 degrees 20 to 30 minutes, until edges start to look golden brown. How long it takes to cook depends on how thin you roll the dough, and how big the cookies are, so watch the first batch carefully so you know how long to bake them. Cool on wire rack nor newspapers on countertop, out of reach of drooling pooches.

Big cookies: 2 dozen. Small cookies: maybe as many as 5 or 6 dozen. It just depends on how thin the dough, and how big the cookie cutter.

Wow, Mary, Bear & Murph. Those bacon cookies sounds waaaaaaaaaaay tastier than the kind we made!!!!

My human has never made bacon grease before, so this could be challenging. The word 'congealed' made her go EEEEEW but you make the grease sound SO good.

Superthanks for the recipe. I know my human is afraid of recipes, but I'm determined to make her do it.

Hi Puglet, maybe you could do a swap with somebody and get some bacon grease that way and not have to make it. Or ask a friend to save some for you. My human keeps a special covered glass dish in the refrigerator with the grease in it. When she makes bacon - not nearly often enough for us! - she pours the grease from the skillet into the grease bowl and puts it back in the refrigerator to get cold. That way when it's time to make our special cookies, the grease is ready. Christmas is coming! and there will be bacon cookies in our fancy Christmas socks! We like that Santa dude. We've never caught him in the fireplace but we keep trying.
