UH, I MEAN 18

Remember how I said my human can't count? Well, she can't. And before I end up having to wear these stupid deer ears any longer than I absolutely have to, yesterday's post should have been 19 days of Christmas - not 20. Which means Christmas (and the end of deer ears) is only 18 days away.

Ok. So, if I remember right, weird leafless trees are a big part of what Christmas is all about. Last year we had a live baby tree that we planted outside so it could grow up into a big tree, but that didn't quite happen. The whole thing was kinda traumatic, so I asked my human if we could just buy a dead tree this year. They sell them on like every street corner and I figured it's better to start out with a dead tree than have a live one die, y'know?

At least that's what I thought. Until we went scouting new locations for stupid Frolic and came across some serious tree carnage in the woods. Or what used to be woods until someone cut down all the trees.

Instead of woods, there were big yellow tree-killing machines and huge piles of dead trees. They weren't the weird leafless kind, or I would have talked my human into bringing one home. I guess since they're not weird and leafless, someone just left them there to be dead? It was kinda sad and has me rethinking the whole Christmas tree thing.

I know there must be a way to celebrate Christmas that doesn't involve killing trees. Preferably something you don't have to wear on your head. Any ideas??

PS: Dutch the skinny-necked-spotted-bed-hogging freak is really into wearing the stupid santa hat. He says it makes him feel "mysterious", but I think he just likes being able to hide from Nikon. He hides and still gets to be on today's stupid Daily Frolic. So. Not. Fair.

Hi Pug, here in Australia people don't often get a real tree (dead or alive) to decorate. We use plastic trees that we can re-use every year. The one my parents currently have is about 20 year old and still looking great!

Hi Puglet!

I *love* your Christmas countdown with deer ears, you are so cute :) And Dutchman too in his red Santa hat :)

My humans don't like putting up dead trees either, and it makes them upset that after Christmas there are still dead trees that haven't been claimed. We go plastic in our house, it's our 6th year recycling our tree and that makes us happy.

Hi Puglet,
Our mom & dad brought a live tree home once, when we lived in PA. After it warmed up and hatched bugs mom swore no more live trees. Which is kinda good cause now we have plastic tree that gets used year after year.. you get the picture. A recycled tree is a good thing even if the cat takes up residence under it.

That yellow tree eating thing is awful Puglet, just like the poor dead trees left on curbs after Christmas.
Oh..if Dutch is *Mysterious* wearing his hat you are *Majestic* with your antlers.

OH, okay! My humans put up this thing they call a "tree." It must be one of those plastic ones cause it doesn't smell like any tree I've ever sniffed before! My human says she misses the smell of a real tree, but hates to see all the used, dead trees piled up in the streets after X-mas. She also questions the "green-ness" of a big plastic tree, but this one has been in the family for 14+ years so I think it's here to stay.
Oh, I don't have deer ears, but my humans brought home some squishy collar with bells on it! Boy, does it make noise! They also brought home a giant sock thing, said it was my "stocking." WTPug? I don't wear socks! AND, I have 4 feet! Weird.

We totally saw Dutch on the daily frolic. He has such beautiful eyes. hehe

Sorry about those ears. I don't like to wear them either. I make Lincoln wear them.

Puglet, I don't think you should worry so much about the tree thing. Dead tree isn't good but neither is plastic tree (in my opinion). It's more important to have that warm fuzzy feeling in your heart for Christmas. So, hang some pretty sparkly lights in your windows to enjoy and share with the outside world! A few Chrismas cookies will help too.

Hey Puglet,

My mom decided to buy one of those pretend trees this year. I don't get it, but something about the silly foster puppy chewing on the needles. She got a fake (shhh, don't tell her I called it that, she freaks out) tree and some pine cones, and I must admit, our house smells pretty doggone Xmas-y.
And, Oh Puglet, my yummy Omegas came last weekend. Wow! fantastically tasty. I think my mom was more excited than me, and she didn't even eat any; weird, humans are! Mom gave me a few, and then put them in our food cabinet. You have no idea what I would have given to have thumbs at that moment. Thanks so much Puglet. I LOVE my omegas. They are are heavenly.
Hugs,
Lucy

P.s. - Mom made me share with my silly brother, sisters and foster siblings. HUMPH!!

Hi Puglet,

You could celebrate Seinfeld style and decorate an aluminum pole for Festivus, but uhh thats not really Christmas.

You can decorate your crate to put you in the spirit...

Hey Puglet!
My human FINALLY figured out how to let me follow you here! She can be really slow sometimes but at least she picked a picture of me singing so that's cool...anyway, I'm happy to be your friend here and I like to talk a lot so I'll prolly have a few things to say along the way.

Your friend in Pugness,

Hey Puglet,
My family doesn't put up a tree, real or fake because the trouble-making cat. Instead they put up pretty garland in a tree shape on the wall with a skirt underneath and put the presents there. Of course this is all in the basement - the "Pug Free Zone" where I am not allowed to go.

This is my first Christmas in a real home. I hear there will be lots of yummy treats to share and that these presents may contain toys for me. At lest that is what my brother-cat tells me.

We totally got a tree this year, I picked it out! I understand the whole tree thing, but we make sure to recycle it every year. The best thing about a tree? The presents marked "Bellatrix" under it. They smell yummy!

P.S. I'm pretty sure there's one marked "Pug" "Dutch" and "Spencer" too. Those smell yummy too! Mom says you can share our tree if you don't want to get one of your own.

I understand your dilemma Puglet. My dad did some research on this issue and discovered that almost all fake trees are made in China and shipped very far to get to the US.

Local tree farms are usually small businesses that plant two trees for every tree they cut down. Plus, in the years the trees are growing, they clean the air and provide shelter for birds and other animals.

Also, Christmas (leaf-free) trees grow fast unlike the trees you saw at the log place.

My dad says there are advantages and disadvantages to both kinds of trees, but he thinks that buying a local real tree isn't something to feel guilty about.

Hi Puglet,
The family decided to do a pretend tree many years ago after watching a few houses in the neighborhood catch fire from their Christmas trees. It is just too hard to keep a real but dead tree from drying out. So they chose fake. The nice thing about real trees (even if dry) is they can be mulched. But a pretend tree can be used for many many years. Ecologically speaking, it is almost a wash.
You ROCK in those antlers. Are you just looking for sympathy cuz you LOOK like you are ROCKIN' it on purpose. And Dutch, that hat is so YOU!

Hmmmm. Interesting. I had no idea the weird leafless trees were so... controversial? And that they come in plastic. And catch on fire. Or that they can be bad for cats.

I wonder if the plastic ones are made out of recycled soda bottles or something. Y'know, like green fake trees?

We have many allergies in our home, plus my mom is super afraid of fire, so we went plastic. It is pretty funny actually because it is white and referred to as the "charlie brown" tree. We don't do the lights, and use the ol' hand crafted ornaments that mom made back in elementary school.
We think the Stocking is waaaayyy more important because that is where the treats hide!

I live in Oregon where most of the dead leafless trees are born. It's exciting to watch them packed on to trucks, on their way to make people's holidays happy. The farms where most of them grow up actually make pretty good habitat for little creatures like rabbits, and since leafless trees grow naturally here, they don't really need any pesticides, which is good.
I was excited and surprised to find out that a nursery (plant, not people) here RENTS live trees which they will deliver and pick up.
No matter what, if any, kind of tree or tree shaped object you end up with, I'm sure you'll have a great holiday Puglet! Some lights and shiny ornaments go a long way to making everything festive.
I can't wait to see more of you and Dutch in your holiday gear!

We get a real tree although we have little fake trees, too. Our city is very supportive of mulching the trees, so when we don't need the tree anymore, a big truck comes to pick it up and turn it into mulch for the community gardens and city landscapes. Saves our city some money, keeps our city employees working and helps the environment with the mulch part.

But if no tree is your thing, you can always get a rosemary bush shaped like a Christmas tree. Those can be planted in big pots or outside, when the weather is good. And they smell super good and taste good on chicken.
