I DIDN'T EAT A WOODCHIP

Well, thanks to my supertired human we slept through my parade. And Halloween. And even Huge Sandy. Yup. Pretty much missed all of it. I'm pretty sure everyone has had enough of Huge Sandy by now, but if you're on the Eat Coast - we hope you are SAFE.

(Chaz in Hoboken, Frodo+Molly in Brick, Sid+friends in Brooklyn - been thinking about you!)

Sleeping gets really boring after awhile so I was pretty excited when we finally left the house... and headed straight for PetSmart to buy more dog food. It was night time so we came right home, but my human promised we'd hike with the cows first thing in the morning.

I was cool with that. Until about 4am. When I started puking. And puking. And puking... until I couldn't puke anymore and went to sleep. I don't know if there's a world record for puking, but if there is, I'm pretty sure I broke it. Or at least came in 2nd.

When I woke up in the morning, I felt like poo. My human fed me breakfast but my stomach didn't want to eat it. When I wouldn't eat my food, she tried to feed me chicken. And cheese. And pumpkin. And baby food. She even tried to give me bacon, but my stomach wanted nothing to do with any of it.

HUMAN: Puglet, did you eat a woodchip?
ME: No.
HUMAN: A rock? Stick? Chunk of bark?
ME: No.
HUMAN: Did you accidentally swallow anything?? I promise not to bludgeon you. Just tell me the truth.

The truth was no. And I wasn't lying either. Really. I mean we'd been stuck in the house for days, what could I have eaten?  I didn't know why my stomach hurt, but I knew it wasn't from eating a freaking woodchip.

I tried everything to make my stomach happy. I sat up, I laid down. I took a nap, went for a walk. I even ate some nasty grass at the park. But nothing made the hurt go away. By the afternoon, things really started hurting. Like, everything. Breathing even hurt.

That's when we went to the vet. Miley+Boka's mom came along to keep my human from having a nervous breakdown. And I guess take pictures of me looking pathetic.

Me looking not-so-cute.

My human told the vet all about all the things I've tried to eat. Told her I hadn't eaten all day and how that never EVER happens. The vet stuck the thing up my butt and listened to me breathe. She said my vitals were all normal, whatever that means. I was too busy tying not to hurt to listen to what the humans were saying and next thing you know I'm lying on top of some giant machine getting pictures of my insides taken.

My insides.
My insides didn't look so great. The black blobs in the picture are just farts, but see all that other stuff that looks like a whole bunch of big fat sausages? Those are my small intestines. And I guess small intestines are supposed to look like skinny little hotdogs, not big fat sausages.

The vet said a few things can make intestines turn from hotdogs to sausages. Something called a 'bowel obstruction' is one of those things. My human says 'bowel obstruction' is the technical term for stuck woodchip so even though I totally did NOT eat a woodchip, she was totally convinced I did.

I spent the rest of the day, the whole entire night, and the next day at the vet. They filled me up with fluids and drugs to help my intestines look like hotdogs again. I didn't eat for like 46 hours and 49 minutes. They took more pictures of my insides. I heard someone say if I didn't poop something out soon, they'd have to open me up.

OPEN. ME. UP.

That's code for surgery. I had a heart attack and freaking died during surgery once. Seriously. For like 3 minutes, I was dead. No way was anyone going to open me up. So I pooped. And out came this:

Actual size = AS BIG AS MY FOOT

Yeah. Something the size of my foot came out of my butt. Yes, it hurt. My human really needs her thumbs back now, so I'll have to tell you the rest tomorrow. Don't worry, I came home yesterday and am totally ok.

Oh, and if you have any of these, DO NOT eat them:

Hiya Puglet!
Wesa have to say that us puggies are bad about snarfing things up whole...mama said your mama should probably forget about "Greenies" as well...they look like small toothbrushes and some of us (ahem...Gracie Lynn) likes to swallow the small one's whole. She's tiny but has a mighty good swallowing gene like yourself.
Get well soon!

OMG Puglet! How scary! I will pass on the message to all my pug peeps (and other dogs too) not to eat those evil bones. In this month of being thankful, I am thankful that you are all right after that horrible experience. And you totally didn't eat a woodchip!
On an aside, your farts look like the pearls in bubble tea. That's kinda cool.
Licks,
Sabrina.

Wow, Puglet, I'm am so sorry to hear about you getting sick. You looked very sad and uncomfortable.

I am gladding your feeling better and didn't need surgery. Be careful, ok? We don't want anything to happen to Puglet!
And happy Puglet is better than sick Puglet. Glad you got this situated without surgery.

OMG PUG! First, let me say that I am glad you are ok. Second, thank your human for showing us what was actually in that zip lock bag. She almost tossed her cookies imagining all of the possibilities...then she finally scrolled down and reallized it was just an unchewed dog bone. She still feels a little queezy after seeing that bag, but she is sooo glad you are ok!

Barbara said...

Puglet, I'm so glad you pooped it out, but have you ever heard of "chewing"? It looks like you swallowed huge pieces!!!!

Oh, Man, Puglet... Just reading about your ordeal made my paws sweat! Thank God you're OK now.
Take it easy, go slow on your stomach at first.

Oh dear Puglet!!!!

My mom is very upset because I did almost the same thing this past weekend, everything hurt, and I couldn't get comfortable. She was getting ready to take me to the vet when I started to fart. And I farted for a loooooooong time, then I finally managed a poop, and I've been fine ever since.

BUT I've been eating those same bone things. I only have a few teeth, so I don't swallow them whole, and mine were the small ones, but mom has put them away so I can't get them.

We're just so glad you're ok!

Sammy and Neko said...

Is that the one came out of your butt??? You don't chew??
Hope you are ok, and hope folks in Eat Coast are ok too.

Ohh puglet my heart hurts reading this and seeing your poor lil' sad and hurting face in the pics (although you still look handsome as ever even feeling notsogreat).

I am soooo happy that disgusting goop cleared from your inside hotdogs and so grateful you're feeling better.

Prayers and lots of snuggles your way precious boy!

EEEWWWWWW. Glad to see you are ok, poor little thing. Pretty drastic way to loose some weight.

OK, no more anything like this for Tessa....she only has about 1/2 her teeth. Little bites.

Dang we just wrote a long comment and it got deleted!
typing is hard...

We are so sorry you were sick Puglet! Chewing is way overrated, but sometimes you have to do it so your human can give you yummies.

Only one of us has had the 'open you up' surgery for bowel obstruction, but twice this year for eating rocks, and it is not fun, not fun. Super bad stuff, so please be careful and big hug to you. hope you are feeling better now!!!

I'm joining in with the pugs who are glad you "eliminated" the problem in your sausage insides. This makes me think about what I don't chew and what Gus doesn't, too. Our Guardian is pretty watchful about what we chew--maybe too much so. Maybe this is why some of our bully sticks and cow ears seem to vanish mysteriously.

Puglet, we are so glad you are OK! But gosh, that is really scary. We know you are known for eating just about everything, but please be careful in the future!

Oh Puglet! I'm so glad you have poo'd! And I'm glad your human can relax a bit--I guess you got her attention!

Someone gave me some of those bones for Barney but I might have to throw them out. Beulah has a habit of stealing Barney's snacks (and he has a habit of letting her).

I hope you get home to sleep off your ordeal and get retroactive food for all of those meals you missed!

Pug, we are so glad you are better and didn't have to have surgery. You aren't alone. Tallulah would totally have swallowed those too. It's a matter of time before her gulping stuff down leads to emergency surgery. Her scare this year was with a peach pit. She also pooped it out before she had to have surgery.
PS, so glad Sophie and your grandma are ok.

Pug, we have to say, we've been worried since we hadn't heard from you in awhile, and now this! Holy Pug, Pug. Your human was smart to take you the vet since you didn't even eat BACON. We're so glad you're feeling better, but that stuff in the bag looks gross, and we're guessing pain-ful to pass.

OMP!!! Puglet that is a crazy story! I'm so glad to hear you are ok. What a traumatic experience - especially the part about not eating for almost 47 hours - I cannot even imagine that...heck, I can't even imagine skipping a meal. I know you have big paws so that THING must be HUUUUGE! So glad it came out before they'd have to "go in" for it. Eeep. So glad you are feeling better, dude. Hope you get back to your normal food routine soon.

Sid.

P.S. The PugSlope HQ came out pretty-much unscathed by Sandy somehow. I think it was due all my barking.

I am so happy you are ok Puglet, your sickness didn't sound fun at all... As for me, my Hoboken home made it without water, but we had to relocate to a friend's house with power for a week.... It was fun, except there were 3 dogs upstairs I couldn't play with... I got home on Saturday and have been power napping since.... I hope Sophie and Miss Amanda's mom are alright... I have been thinking of them!

Max and Lola send good karma from Toronto.

They say that Mom gets them fresh beef soup bones from the butcher. They are very big and tasty and last what seems like forever. They are too large to swallow and do not splinter, so make safe eating.

So glad you are on the mend, Puglet.

Poor Puglet, I am glad to hear you are ok. My mommy's pug ate a greenie and it got stuck and did not come out! He had to have emergency surgery to remove it. Glad you got it out on your own.

DUDE!!!!!! That is no good......I never chew either which is why my human doesn't let me have ANYTHING that I might be able to swallow....If I see her coming to take it I will swallow faster and larger pieces so she has to sneak up on me and grab it.....SOOOOOO glad you are ok and you need to take a break from eating things that could possibly make you sick.

Puglet! I was thinking you had what my Mommy had for the past 4 days. Symptoms sure sounded familiar. BUT I am pretty SURE she did not eat one of those bone things. I hope that is what caused your obstruction and that you are feeling better soon.
What is with all these treats APPARENTLY being so dangerous for pets? It's gotten so bad that even a carrot is suspect.
Sheesh!

Darling Puglet,

I am so glad you are feeling better. How scary for you all (even Dutch!)at your house. Evil, evil bones. At our house mom stands over us and says "Chew. Swallow. Breathe." She calls it our mantra, whatever that is (sounds like a giant fish). Big meaty bones that aren't straight are good to eat. We like those.

Snooze now and rest from your trauma. Soon you will feel just like new.

Oh, Puglet. That's terrible. I feel your pain (actually I do--I had a bad tummy last night because... I ate too much--you don't do that do you?). Anyway, my pug had tummy problems too. He liked to eat little bits of plastic from my brother's model airplanes and stuff. he even tried the wedges from our game of Trivial Pursuit. And... he used to try to swallow hole those chew sticks. Don't do that! It's not good.

Hope you feel better soon... and please be considerate of your human. She probably felt worse than you did!
